Posted for Halloween in 2009, Philomena’s Fright is one of the school stories I’ve written about the Academy, the boarding school favored by mad scientists for their most promising offspring. The picture was taken at the historic Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, DC, at the annual Those Who Mourn picnic, organized by the magnificent Phil Powell. Yes, we carved turnip lanterns (which figure in the story) and yes, that’s the actual Philomena. The only thing my clever husband did to the photo was turn day into night.
